Houston junior Kyle Poynter, who sprained his ankle Friday afternoon and missed the Tigers’ game against Thayer, was cleared just hours before Tuesday’s matchup with Liberty.

Houston coach Brent Hall said Poynter received clearance from a doctor Tuesday to play when he was ready. A physical therapist called Hall around 4 p.m. and said Poynter could play.

Hall said he was instructed to start Poynter if he was going to play at all. The PT said Poynter’s ankle would be the most comfortable immediately after warmups.

Hall estimated Poynter’s health at about 75 percent. Although his presence drew Liberty’s attention, Poynter wasn’t as aggressive as normal. He finished with 12 points – about half his season average – in a 62-48 loss.
