After a five-week run of featuring stories about county and state agencies of various types, the Houston Herald will go a different direction in its Feb. 24 issue with a feature story about a local resident with a long history in the walnut timber business.

But this doesn’t figure to be an article about a typical logger or timber man; it will be about Joe Gunter, a.k.a. “The Walnut King,” a man with 52 years of experience of cutting walnut trees and logs in southern Missouri, one of the nation’s primary walnut hotbeds.

He’s not particularly interested in anything to do with gathering fallen nuts, but if there’s timber to be felled, Gunter is your man.

Also look on the Herald website for video of The Walnut King in action, as he skids walnut logs with tried and true equipment he has been using for decades.
